Community Schools

The following list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week is printed as a reminder to preregistered participants. Anyone interested in a class or activity should call the Community Schools office at 262-6768.


Introduction to the Kenai River with Bill Berkhahn and Jacques Kosto, Alaska State Park rangers Kenai River rangers will provide information about the Kenai River, including fishing and boating regulations, safety equipment, water craft operation, cold water survival, biology and fishing techniques. For more information, call rangers Bill Berkhahn or Jacques Kosto at 262-5581. The class is open to teens and adults with a five-person minimum. It meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays for two weeks in the Kenai River Center conference room. There is no fee, but participants must preregister.


Literature Discussion Group with Dagmar Mayer This book club for students in grade five and older will read the book, "Holes" by Luis Sachar and have a weekly discussion of the book, culminating with a movie viewing. Participants should check their school library, book fairs or book orders for copies of the book. The group has a seven-person minimum and 12-person maximum. It meets from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays for four weeks in the Soldotna Middle School library. There is no fee.

How to Choose a Handheld with John Pothast, Palm educational training consultant The class will cover options to consider when purchasing any brand of handheld computer. The class has a five-person minimum and 30-person maximum. It will meet from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in the Skyview High School library. There is no fee.

Palm Handheld Basics with John Pothast This class will cover the basic operations of the Palm handheld computers. Topics covered will include inputting dates and the applications that come standard on every Palm, including date book, address book, to-do list and memo pad. This session is designed for the beginning user. It has a five-person minimum and 30-person maximum. The class will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays for two weeks in the Skyview High School library. The cost is $15.

Toddler Time The Soldotna Middle School gym is open from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays for 15 weeks for an open gym for children ages 1 to 3 with their parents. Participants should bring physical education toys to share. There will be no Toddler Time on March 2 and May 11. There is no fee.


Cake Decorating with Karen Otter, "The Cake Lady" Participants will learn decorating and frosting tips as well as new techniques and tricks and will get to take home one cake after the last class. The class is open to teens and adults with a four-person minimum and eight-person maximum. It will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays for two weeks in the Soldotna Middle School home economics room. The fee is $15.

Couples Communication for Women: Understanding Men with Dr. Kathleen Dinius, licensed psychologist Do men speak a different language. Do men talk at all? Or do they just want to solve the problem? And why won't men listen to you? Let's talk about man's inner workings. The class is open to adults and meets from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School conference room. The cost is $15.


There will be no gentlemen's basketball at Soldotna Middle School due to parent-teacher conferences.

Kenai Peninsula Food Bank Tour with Linda Swarner Come see the "behind the scenes" of the food bank and learn the latest food bank statistics. The tour is open to all ages and runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m., with lunch available at 11:30. Participants should meet at the food bank, 33955 Community College Drive, off Kalifornsky Beach Road. There is no fee.

Home Landscaping Workshop with Nancy Casey, professional landscape designer and land use planner with Casey Planning & Design This class provides instruction and information to assist homeowners in designing their home landscape. Discussions will include basic space planning and landscape design concepts such as site analysis, site programming, the use of land form, structures, texture and color in design and common landscape problems. The instructor will provide information on plant and construction materials, opportunities for one-on-one instruction and hands-on design experience. No previous design or drawing experience is needed, only interest and enthusiasm. The class is open to teens and adults and meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays for three weeks at Soldotna Middle School. The cost is $50 per participant or $60 for a couple.


Marbling with Joyce Cox, Girl Scout field executive Color paper, boxes and cards with your own design. Two sessions will be offered. Ages 5 to 8 will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and ages 9 to 17 will meet from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Each session has a 10-person minimum and 15-person maximum. The classes meet in the Kenai Peninsula College art room. The cost is $22 for the general public and $12 for Girl Scout members.
