Seward girls knock off top-ranked Buccaneers

Posted: Monday, February 09, 2004

Breanna Bardarson scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Seward girls to a 53-39 romp over the Valdez Buccaneers in the final game of the Dimond High School tournament Saturday in Anchorage. The Buccaneers came into the game ranked No. 1 in the most recent 3A basketball poll, but were outclassed by Seward, which used an 18-8 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Lisa Steinbrecher and Krista Boulden each added eight for Seward, which entered the game ranked No. 3 in the 3A poll.

It was the second big win in as many days for the Seahawks, who held 4A Bartlett to just 13 point in the first three quarters en route to a 40-25 rout Friday. The Seahawks' only loss in the tournament came Thursday, when the Service Cougars escaped with a 59-51 win over the surging Seahawks.
