Mt. Edgecumbe sweeps Kenai

The Mt. Edgecumbe girls and boys basketball teams swept Kenai Central on Thursday in nonconference basketball action in Sitka.

The Mt. Edgecumbe boys notched a 77-55 victory behind 32 points from John Clark, who will attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks next year on a basketball scholarship. Caleb McGraw added 23 points for the Braves.

For Kenai, Casey Ellis had 20 points, while Cory Toombs added 11. Also for the Kardinals, Nate Saltzgiver had eight points, Ryan Ferguson had five points, Zach Beeson had five points, Daniel Gustkey had three points, Josh Lazaro had two points and Josh Werba had a point.

The Lady Braves topped the Kardinals 33-28. Kyla Steward had 12 points for the Kardinals, while Damaris Craig had nine, Hannah Delaney, Katie Foley and Samantha Hull had two apiece and Lacie Wortham added one.

Ninilchik girls 67, Homer JV 24

The host Wolverines put three players in double figures to defeat the Mariners on Thursday.

Krista Leman, with four 3-pointers, led all scorers with 18 points, while Lindsey Rohr and Kayleigh Rice added 12 points apiece.

Ninilchik boys 65, Homer JV 35

The host Wolverines cruised to victory over Homer’s junior varsity on Thursday, with three players in double figures.

Danny Roderick paced Ninilchik with 20 points, while Austin Vanderford had 16 points and Brandon Nobles had 15 points. Also for the Wolverines, Cody Presley had six points, and Tyler Sutherland and Sean Dwyer had four points apiece.

Dillingham girls 34, Seward 21

Visiting Dillingham notched a nonconference victory over Seward on Thursday, led by 10 points apiece from Virginia Bobbitt and Heidi Andrews.

For Seward, Rubye Foldager had six points, Katie Kain had five points, Michelle Buchanan had four points and Denali Foldager, Tarrah Beals and Ivana Banic had two points apiece.

Nikolaevsk boys 61, Whittier 54

The host Warriors opened up the Conoco Phillips/Warrior Rumble with a victory over the Eagles on Thursday.

Daniel Nestor paced Nikolaevsk with 27 points, while Markell Melkomukov had 14. For Whittier, Wayne Shen had 23 points and Nick Swain added 19.

In today’s boys action, Meade River will take on Anderson at 2:30 p.m. in one semifinal and Nikolaevsk will take on Valley Christian at 5:30 p.m. in the other semifinal. The winner plays for the championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.

In the third-place semifinals, Whittier will take on the Meade River-Anderson loser at 8:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play the Nikolaevsk-Valley Christian loser at noon on Saturday for third place.

In the girls tournament, Kenai’s junior varsity plays Meade River at 4 p.m. today and Nikolaevsk faces Valley Christian at 7 p.m. today. The winners play for the championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., while the losers play for third place at 10:30 a.m.

Tok boys 55, Seldovia 46

The host Wolverines received 18 points from Randy Demit and 10 from Kyle Lachnet in defeating the Sea Otters in nonconference basketball on Thursday. Levi Harkness had 15 points for Seldovia.

Seldovia girls 61, Tok 32

Tatiana Gruber led all scorers with 14 points as the visiting Sea Otters picked up a nonconference victory on Thursday against the Wolverines.
