Nikiski girls take fourth place at Lynx tourney

The Nikiski Bulldogs took fourth place in the 2002 Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High School in Anchorage, Saturday.

Nikiski started the three-day tournament with a loss to Bartlett Thursday, 45-43 in overtime. The Bulldogs rebounded Friday, however to defeat Palmer 43-31. Nikiski played Grace Christian Saturday for the fourth-place title, beating the Grizzlies 45-35.

The Warriors were outmatched by the Wolverines Friday in a District 3/2A game as Buck Kvasnikoff and Jesse Hostetter led Ninilchik to a victory with 23 and 22 points respectively.

The Homer boys edged out Seward in a tight nonregion struggle. Mariners junior David Drake led all scorers with 26 points, logging six 3-point buckets.

Seward's Jonah Swiderski and Jake Boulden contributed 18 and 17 points, respectively, but were unable to come up with enough to push past the Mariners.

The West Eagles notched a nonregion win over the Kardinals in a rematch of the SoHi Tip-off championship game.

West kept Kenai out of the shooting lanes, forcing the Kardinals to go to a perimeter game. The Eagles' lead point-getter was Ski Davis with 20, and Kenai was led by Marcus Webster, who had 18.

The Mariners edged out the Panthers in the Skyview gymnasium Saturday in a Region III/4A game with a last-second basket.

With the scored tied at 46 points each, Homer junior Josh Luebbert launched a baseline jumper with 0.8 seconds to go in regulation. The shot connected for two points, shutting the lights out on the Panthers as time expired.

With less than 30 seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter of a Region III/4A game, Skyview's Laurel Creel hit two crucial free throws to seal the win for the Panthers.

Homer's Caitlin Crandall and Skyview's Jenny Carpenter topped the box scores with 13 points each.
