The following is a list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week. It is printed to serve as a reminder for registered participants. If you are interested in a class or activity but are not preregistered, call the Soldotna Community Schools office at 262-6768.
Adopting Internationally with adoption specialist Teresa Brown -- A parent panel panel will answer questions about their experiences and the agencies they used to adopt children from China, Vietnam, Korea, India, Guatemala, Russia, Kazakhstan and Peru. Among the agencies will be New Hope Child and Family Agency, World Association for Children and Parents, Heritage Adoption Agency, Chinese Children Adoption International. The session will be one night only and is open to adults with a five-person minimum. It will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Soldotna Middle School library. The cost is $10.
Tips for Managing Anger with Kathleen Dinius, licensed psychologist -- Learn about why people get angry and how to respond to the feeling before it gets out of control. The class will meet one night only and is open to teens and adults. It will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 4. The cost is $10.
Pharmacy Tour with Tom Hodel, certified pharmacist with Soldotna Professional Pharmacy -- Find out what goes on behind the counter at a pharmacy, from compounding creams and capsules to working with computer systems. The tour is one day only and is open to teens and adults. It will be offered from 3 to 4 p.m. at Soldotna Professional Pharmacy, 299 . Binkley in Soldotna. There is no fee.
Elegant Greeting Cards with Bonnie Veatch-Bates, Stampin' Up! demonstrator -- Participants will create two to five cards as time allows. Attendees should have experience with rubber stamps and should bring a sack lunch. The class is one day only and is open to people 16 and older with a three-person minimum and 15-person maximum. The class will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 6. The cost is $20.
Fur Skin Sewing with Loraine Larsen, skinsewer -- The class will include demonstrations of hide stretching and will teach skin sewing techniques and secrets for making trapper- and trooper-style fur hats, women's dress band hats, sheepskin slippers with beaver cuffs, baby booties and hats, children's beaver mittens, earmuffs and fur mittens. Supplies for small ornament projects will be provided, and materials for large projects will be available for sale at the class. The class is open to teens and adults with a five-person minimum and 15-person maximum. There will be eight sessions, with the class meeting from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the Soldotna Middle School home economics room. The cost is $35.
Silk Painting for Kids with Joyce Cox, Girl Scout field executive -- Students will create art by painting on fabrics. There will be a class for students ages kindergarten through third grade from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a class for students ages fourth through ninth grade from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The classes will have a 10-person minimum and 15-person maximum and will meet in the Kenai Peninsula College art room. The cost is $20.
Introduction to Microsoft Word with Beth Strange, computer lab assistant -- Participants should already know how to access the desktop and perform basic keyboarding. The class will cover Word basics. The class is open to teens and adults, with a five-person minimum and 12-person maximum. The class will meet for three sessions, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays at the Soldotna Middle School Dell lab. The cost is $40.
