Panthers grapple to second at state

Skyview's Hutchison and Soldotna's Goracke and Weigle capture state titles

Posted: Monday, February 10, 2003

Traditional powerhouse West Valley, behind three state champions, took its eighth state championship Sunday at the Class 4A state wrestling championships in Ketchikan.

Skyview, which had taken fall state wrestling championships the past two years, finished second. The Panthers scored 134.5 points, while West Valley had 174.

The peninsula had three state champions at the meet -- two from fifth-place Soldotna, and one from Skyview. The state champions were Skyview's Eli Hutchison, Soldotna's Colten Goracke and Soldotna's Shawn Weigle.

Hutchison, a freshman wrestling at 112 pounds, picked up the first championship for the peninsula. He completed an undefeated season by beating Colony's Dustin Killion 2-0.

After no score in the first period, Hutchison started the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Killion was whistled for stalling, putting Hutchison up 2-0. Hutchison started the third period in the top position, and rode out the entire period for the win.

The second championship from the peninsula came at 160 pounds, where Soldotna teammates Colten Goracke, a senior and a state champion last year, and Johnny Howarth, a senior, squared off. Goracke won 3-1.

There was no score in the first period. Then, Goracke started the second period with a takedown and earned an escape to start the third period to take control of the match.

Soldotna senior Shawn Weigle, wrestling at 215 pounds, picked up the peninsula's final state championship. Weigle defeated West Valley's Jay Fulk 5-3.

Weigle had a 4-2 lead on Fulk with 1:29 left in the second period. He increased that lead to 5-2 with an escape. Fulk got a point on Weigle for stalling, but that was all the West Valley wrestler was able to muster.

In addition to Howarth, several peninsula wrestlers came up short in the finals. At 130 pounds, Homer senior Monte Garroutte lost to West Valley's David Weise 14-6.

Garroutte took the lead early in the match with a takedown, but Weise turned things in his favor with a near fall that gave him a 6-2 edge in the first. Weise then controlled the second period for a 13-6 lead.

At 140 pounds, Skyview junior Brandon Cleveland lost a 9-5 decision to Palmer's Jonah Stewart. Cleveland started the third period down 6-4, but Stewart immediately scored an escape and takedown to increase the lead to 9-4.

Taking third place from the peninsula were Homer's Camron Hagen at 103 pounds and Skyview's Dallas Seavey at 130 pounds.

West Valley coach Dan Carstens said the title was fulfilling due to years of hard work his seniors put in. Said Carstens of his team's victory, "What's great is this is my first full year of seniors."
