A Soldotna couple was killed Wednesday afternoon when their vehicle crashed head-on with a tractor trailer on the Seward Highway.

Teresa Stafford, 40, and her husband, Jay Stafford, 49, were driving southbound in their Caravan minivan near the Hope cutoff at Mile 57 of the Seward Highway at 2:53 p.m. when they collided with the northbound commercial tractor trailer rig driven by Gilbert Montiel, 50, of Chugiak, on the Canyon Creek bridge, according to a report from Alaska State Troopers.

Montiel was not injured.

The highway was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared.

Weather and road conditions were described as poor, troopers said.

No other information was available at the Clarion's press time.
