Kenai skaters shock SoHi to earn state berth

Posted: Sunday, February 11, 2001

Boone Hall had a dream about his Kenai Kardinals team the night before their playoff contest against the Soldotna Stars, but it was no fairy tale.

Kenai played the game of its life to upset the fifth-ranked Soldotna Stars 6-3 in the semifinals of the North Star Conference Championships Friday at the Brett Memorial Arena in Wasilla.

The Kardinals bid for the North Star Conference title ended Saturday as Kenai fell to the sniper-like shooting of the powerhouse Colony Knights. The Knights tallied up a 12-1 drubbing of the Kards for their third straight conference title, scoring nine goals before Kenai managed to put a point on the board on an unassisted goal by Adrian Borchgrevink with 6:57 ticked off of the clock in the third period.

Owen Brewer ended his recent scoring slump and set the tone early by scoring the first goal of the game for the Kardinals, who were focused on denying the Soldotna Stars their fifth straight state playoff appearance.

"We were looking for a showdown with SoHi all week," coach Brian Gabriel Sr. said. "I don't think we have ever made it to state. At least as far back as the 80s."

The win guaranteed the Kardinals a berth into the state championship hunt, bringing them close to home when the tournament begins Thursday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The upset-minded Kardinals lit the light again midway through the second period for a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Borchgrevink.

Kenai backcheckers frustrated the Stars' forwards in constant, end-to-end action throughout the game. Referees handed out 42 minutes in penalties in the second period alone, and heavy action in the corners continued into the third period as Kenai effectively badgered the speedy Soldotna skaters.

After losing to the Stars four times during the regular season, the Kards knew that Soldotna would be weary of them.

"I know SoHi was concerned about us," Gabriel said. "I think on the other hand, [Soldotna] felt like, mentally, they couldn't lose."

Although Kenai outshot the Stars 28-20 in the game, Kardinal goaltender Steven Campanella shut down many quality scoring attempts by Soldotna's snipers.

"Our goalie had a hell of a game," Kardinal captain Hall said. "We came out really jacked."

The Stars' Dan Jensen tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal four minutes into the third period, but Phillip Ischi retaliated 15 seconds later to go up 3-2 as Kenai kept heavy pressure on Soldotna goaltender Kelly Gee.

Hall tallied the back-breaker on a controversial goal when Brewer broke in on Gee but lost control of the puck as he approached the net. Gee came out to cut down the angle, but an inadvertent collision between the two left an empty Soldotna net.

"He lost the puck when he tried to deke him, and ran into him behind the net," Hall said. "There was no whistle so he passed it back out."

Hall scored the easy netter with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

"That kind of broke their spirit because they were looking for an interference call," Gabriel said. "Their side was looking real dejected after that."

Jack Darsey made it 5-3 on a short-handed goal just over a minute later right before he committed his fifth penalty of the game and received a one-game suspension. Borchgrevink parked his second goal of the game with an empty-netter with two minutes left in the game to end the Stars' season.

"We all kind of had a funny feeling about it," Hall said. "I had a dream the night before that we were going to beat them 4-0."

Skyview's season drew to a close Friday night with a 5-1 loss to the Colony Knights in the tournament semifinals. Wayne Maxwell scored the only goal for the Panthers, an unassisted tally 1:48 into the second period that pulled Skyview to within a goal, 2-1.

Mike Bell stopped 48 of the 53 Colony shots he faced while the Panthers were able to put 15 shots on the Colony net.
