ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescued three fishermen after their boat hit a rock and sank in the Gulf of Alaska off Cape Chiniak.

Crew members Edesy Fefelov and Sergi Kuzmin, both of Homer, and Vasily Revton of Anchorage, were rescued. They were flown to Kodiak and then transported by ambulance but declined further medical attention.

Fefelov told the Coast Guard he was driving the 39-foot vessel Vehar in bad weather Saturday morning when he hit the rock. It took about a half hour for the Coast Guard to rescue the men after receiving their mayday call. Lt. Patrick Shaw said blowing snow and darkness complicated the rescue.

The rescuers found the fishermen, who had donned survival suits and jumped from the sinking vessel, in the water and in the surf.

They were lifted by basket to the helicopter.

The boat remained aground off Cape Chiniak.
