The following students placed in the district spelling bee, held in Homer on Friday: Adam Uchtman, first, and Mac Wynkoop, third, second grade; Owen Phillips, third, fourth grade; Cody Munn, first, and Michael Horton, second, fifth grade; Hillary Domke, third, sixth grade; Garryn Munn, second, and Holly Kopp, third, seventh grade; Madison McConnell, third, eighth grade; and Garryn Munn, first, and Michael Horton, third, overall. The students who placed in the overall competition will compete in the Regional ACSI spelling bee in Wasilla on March 15.
The CIA choir participated in the boroughwide Mass Choir on Tuesday, when 380 voices united to present an evening of music ranging from classical songs sung in Latin, to southern gospel, to a Brazilian wedding song that included jungle sounds and instruments. Students said the guest director-clinician, Dr. Scott Anderson, was energetic and a brilliant musician, and that the choir members from the other schools were fun and encouraging. Participating CIA students included Jenna Zufelt, Kaitlan White, Tana Alsworth, Alyse Cialek, Kelsey White, Jake Zufelt, Jeremiah Niederhauser, Claire Rowley, Trapper Alsworth, Spencer McAuliffe, Emily Thornton and Tyler Taplin.
Students of the Week are Travis Lindley, for getting ready for outside all by himself; Tyler Fenton, for excellence in science; Hannah Kjeldson, for completing homework on time; Tanner Fowler, for making excellent choices; and Adam Agosti, for excellent effort in academics, debate and making polyhedrons.
Parent-teacher conferences are Thursday and Friday.
There is no school Friday and Monday due to teacher in-service.
There will be a half-day of school April 9 with dismissal at noon to make up for the Jan. 19 snow day.
