Ninilchik girls cruise to title at their own tournament

The Ninilchik girls basketball team clinched first place at their own round-robin tournament by defeating Noorvik 65-20 on Saturday at Ninilchik. The Wolverines finished the tournament 3-0.

Krista Leman led all scorers with 22 points, including hitting all 14 of her foul shots. Lindsey Rohr added 11 points.

The Noorvik boys also finished the tournament 3-0 to take the championship. On Saturday, Noorvik defeated Ninilchik 69-48. Alan Conwell had 19 points for Noorvik, while Cliff Jackson had 14 points and Les Sampson had 13 points. For Ninilchik, Brandon Nobles had 21 points.

On Friday, the Ninilchik girls defeated Soldotna 63-19 behind 12 points from Jen Erickson and 10 points from Krista Leman. The Soldotna junior varsity defeated Ninilchik 54-44. Danny Roderick led Ninilchik with 22 points.

ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble

The Nikolaevsk boys won the Rumble on Saturday by defeating Meade River 57-27 in the championship game at Nikolaevsk. Mavrik Kuzmin paced the Warriors with 13 points, while Daniel Nestor added 10 points.

In the girls championship game, Meade River defeated Nikolaevsk 49-39. Efrosia Yakunin scored 11 points in the loss.

In Friday’s girls semifinals, Nikolaevsk defeated Valley Christian 59-20 and Meade River topped Kenai’s junior varsity 45-36. Efrosia Yakunin had 21 points for Nikolaevsk, while Alex Gordeev added 11 points.

In Friday’s boys semifinals, Meade River defeated Anderson 45-31 and Nikolaevsk topped Valley Christian 67-63 in overtime. Markell Melkomukov paced Nikolaevsk with 24 points, while Mavrick Kuzmin had 17 points and Daniel Nestor added 14 points.

Third place at the tournament went to the Valley Christian boys and Kenai Central junior varsity girls. The sportmanship award went to the Whittier and the Valley Christian girls. The free throw contests were won by Mavrick Kuzmin of Nikolaevsk and Lexi Beeson of Kenai, while Kuzmin and Nikolaevsk’s Alexandra Gordeev won the 3-point contest.

The boys-coed tournament team was Nick Swain of Whittier, Markell Melkomukov of Nikolaevsk, Dennis Hansen of Valley Christian, Billy Hopsen of Meade River, Kuzmin, Wayne Shen of Whittier, Alan Turner of Valley Christian, Dexter Bordeaux of Meade River, Greg Miller of Anderson, Brittani Motoyama of Whittier, James Hollis of Anderson and Stephen Finger of Whittier.

The girls all-tournament team was Stephanie Wong of Meade River, Lauren Wicham of Valley Christian, Khelby Kennedy of Kenai, Sharinda Bordeaux of Meade River, Efrosia Yakunin of Nikolaevsk, Tiffany Hopson of Meade River, Alex Gordeev of Nikolaevsk and Casey Coupchiak of Kenai.

Kodiak girls 34, Skyview 30

The host Bears came back from a 12-4 first-quarter deficit to pick up a Northern Lights Conference victory over the Panthers on Friday.

Kodiak received 10 points apiece from Alysa Horn and Malissa Timpke, while Skyview’s Chelsea Martin led all scorers with 11 points and Melissa Fay added 10 points.

Kodiak boys 59, Skyview 28

The host Bears received 15 points from Michael Thomas and 10 from Joel Alegado in notching a Northern Lights Conference victory over Skyview on Friday.

Kenai boys 63, Sitka 45

Nate Saltzgiver had 20 points to lead the visiting Kardinals to a nonconference victory over the Wolves on Friday.

Cory Toombs added 15 points for the Kardinals, while Zach Beeson had 12.

Sitka girls 39, Kenai 33

The host Wolves overcame a 21-19 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to pick up nonconference victory on Friday. Kelsea Johnson had 16 points for Sitka, while Kyla Steward had 17 points for Kenai.

Tri Valley 58, Seldovia 54, OT

The host Viking Warriors received 22 points from Grace Milliken, 19 points from Courtney Talerico and 10 points from Brandi Skinner in knocking off the Sea Otters on Friday in nonconference action. Stephanie Lewis had 18 points for Seldovia.

Seldovia boys 40, Tri Valley 30

The visiting Sea Otters notched a nonconference victory on Friday behind 10 points from Jordan Geagel.

Seward boys 50, Su Valley 41

Billy Beck poured in 13 points as the host Seahawks notched a Southcentral Conference victory over the Rams on Saturday.

Seward girls 40, Su Valley 24

Rubye Foldager dumped in 18 points as the host Seahawks picked up a Southcentral Conference victory over the Rams on Saturday.

CIA girls 49, Dillingham 36

The host Eagles notched a nonconference victory over the Wolverines on Saturday behind 15 points from Brooke Forsi, 12 points from Melissa Moffis and 11 points from Annie Smithwick.

Kodiak boys 42, Skyview 21

Limited to only eight points in the first half, visiting Skyview fell to Kodiak on Saturday.

Michael Thomas paced the Bears with 12 points, while Max Merick chipped in 10. Richie Shirnberg led the Panthers with eight points.

Kodiak girls 48, Skyview 21

Alysa Horn netted a game-high 20 points in leading the Bears past the visiting Panthers on Saturday.

Nicole Van Ryzin collected a team-high nine points for Skyview in the loss.
