Mineral Wells, Texas, resident Jesse L. Smith, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in Mineral Wells.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Church of God in Mineral Wells. Burial will follow the funeral services Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Indian Creek Cemetery, in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Rev. Jerrel Tomlin and Rev. Terrell Taylor will officiate.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Lipan, Texas, to Jesse C. and Dora Lee Boyd Smith. Jesse entered the pastoral ministry in 1955. His ministry extended from Illinois to Okinawa, Japan and from Texas to Alaska.
"He had a heartfelt dedication to the military service men and women. This dedication prompted his service as Pentecostal servicemen's director in the Far East during the Vietnam War, ministering from Guam to Vietnam and Philippines to Japan and Korean congregations," his family said.
He retired from pastoral ministry in January 1987 and then returned to active ministry in order to start and build a mission church in North Pole. The couple retired to Mineral Wells in 1994 and resumed attending the church where they were married June 29, 1938. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45.
Mr. Smith was proceeded in death by his parents; brothers, Bercus E. and Pinkey P. Smith; sister, Icie Mae Dill; and daughter, Jurine Ann Savage.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Louise (Rushing) Smith, of Mineral Wells; sons, Leon Smith and his wife, Linda, of Sterling and Louis Alton Smith and his wife, Diana, of Mansfield; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner in Texas.
