Ninilchik boys rout Northway

Billy Riley scored 33 points and hit eight 3-pointers to lead the Ninilchik boys basketball team past Northway 64-22 Thursday on the second day of the 2011 Ninilchik Tournament.

The Wolverines are 2-0 at their own tournament after they opened with a 57-30 victory over Homer's junior varsity squad Wednesday.

On Thursday, Riley scored all his points over the first three quarters to help the Wolverines build a 62-17 lead entering the fourth.

Homer's varsity squad took the floor Thursday, beating Tri-Valley 69-27 behind 15 points from Devon Kennelty.

In other boys action, Nikolaevsk defeated Northway 51-40 on Wednesday. Mark Fefelov scored a team-high 17 points for the Warriors, who had a bye Thursday, face Tri-Valley at 7:30 p.m. today and Homer at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Homer boys face Northway at 4:30 p.m. today, while Ninilchik has a bye today and plays Tri-Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday.

In girls action, Ninilchik split its opening two games, beating Homer's junior varsity squad 39-21 on Wednesday before losing to Northway 41-12 on Thursday.

In Wednesday's win, Esther Ehlers paced the Wolverines with 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Nikolaevsk fell to Northway 42-29 on Wednesday and didn't play Thursday. Homer's varsity unit edged Tri-Valley 47-34 on Thursday thanks to Liz Needham's 14 points.

Ninilchik is off today and resumes action at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Homer and Northway square off at 3 p.m. today, while Homer and Nikolaevsk play at noon Saturday.

5th Annual Dean Cummings Basketball Tournament

Keenan Prochazka scored a team-high 24 points as the Seward boys basketball team outlasted Galena 82-73 in the opening round of the 5th Annual Dean Cummings Basketball Tournament at Delta on Thursday.

Andrew Buchanan added 20 points for the Mariners, who face Bethel at 2 p.m. today.

The Cook Inlet Academy boys, meanwhile, fell to Bethel 54-48, despite 22 points from Cody Munn and 16 from Matthew Moffis.

In girls action, Galena defeated Seward 58-50 behind 18 points from Jenna Buchanan and 10 from Rena Pitka.

The Hawks took a 17-9 lead after one quarter, but Seward cut that lead to 29-28 at halftime. Galena outscored Seward 16-8 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

For the Seahawks, Chelsey Clarke had 14 points. Galena will play Dillingham, 44-20 winners over Unalaska, today at 3:30 in the semifinals.

The Cook Inlet girls moved to the semifinals with a 43-33 win over Bethel. For the Eagles, Megan Bauder scored a team-high 17 points. They face Delta at 6:30 p.m. today.
