KETCHIKAN (AP) -- A man who loaded his skiff with sand died over the weekend after the craft capsized.

Coast Guard officials say Roger DeLong, 59, and his wife, Lana DeLong, 54, left Moser Bay Sunday in a skiff to haul beach sand from Stack Island, 19 miles north of Ketchikan.

The skiff, loaded with sand, capsized and sank as the couple tried to return home. The two were able to swim back to Stack Island.

Roger DeLong died during the night, apparently from exposure, the Coast Guard said.

Lana DeLong was able to flag down a passing boat, which notified the Coast Guard. A Navy boat in the area also heard the transmission and picked her up.
