Ninilchik swept aside by Otters

Seldovia girls win title rematch

Posted: Monday, February 12, 2001

The Ninilchik Wolverines girls and boys basketball teams felt the sting of missing players as they fell to the Seldovia Sea Otters in Region II action Friday.

The No.1 ranked girls could not overcome early turnovers and absense of point guard Whitney Leman as they fell to the No. 4 Sea Otters in a 37-30 decision.

"It was a good devensive game for both teams," Ninilchik coach Dan Leman said. "Seldovia is a good team, you don't need excuses when you lose to them."

The Wolverines fell behind by 15-14 at the end of the first half and could not keep up in the second, being outscored 22-16,

"I'm dissapointed that we lost but at the same time I am looking at the positive things," Leman said. Our free throw shooting was good, we had good shot selection and our inside game was looking good. We definately had some positive things happen for us."

The Wolverines were without guard Leman, who was out with a recurring ankle sprain but Coach Leman expects her to return in around a week.

The game, which was a rematch of last season's 2A state title battle, found the Wolverines commiting 25 turnovers, a statistic Leman feels added to the final score.

"I am sure they were looking to jump on us pretty good," he said. "It was a close game, it was there for us to take. With 25 turnovers we kind of shot ourselves in the foot. You're not going to win many games that way."

The Sea Otters followed the scoring ability of Jamie Geagel, who led the squad with 11 points, while teammate Jacqueline Brown added 10. The Wolverines used the presence of junior forward Molly Bosick, who poured in 19 points in the losing effort.

The Ninilchik boys could not stop the scoring power of the Sea Otters as they fell 77-50.

The Wolverines were down by one point heading into the fourth quarter but felt the sting of fouls as their two big post players fouled out, leaving the Sea Otters with a major height advantage.

The Sea Otters outscored the overmatched Wolverines 32-4 in the fourth quarter, walking away with the Region II win.

The Seward Seahawks girls followed the three-point shooting of Erin Carr to knock off the Chugiak Mustangs 52-41 Saturday.

Carr hit five three-pointers and scored 29 points to lead the Seahawks to take third place in the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High.

The Seward boys didn't fair as well Saturday as they fell to Heritage Christian School 77-57.

The Seahawks were led by Jake Elhard, who had 15 points, while teammate Lu ke Davis added 12.
