Shortt to become Fairbanks school superintendent

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The Fairbanks school board announced Monday that Assistant Superintendent Ann Shortt will be the Fairbanks North Star School District's new superintendent.

Shortt replaces Superintendent Jim Holt when he retires June 30.

The board interviewed Shortt and Assistant Superintendent Ernie Manzie for the superintendent position last week. The decision to hire Shortt was unanimous, said school board President Bart LeBon.

Shortt has served as a district assistant superintendent since 1999.

Shortt, 54, began her career as a special education teacher in North Carolina in 1969. During her more than 30 years in the field, she has worked as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent.

Shortt said she plans to continue the district's emphasis on closing the minority achievement gap and dealing with declining enrollment and other budgetary issues when she takes over in July.

Shortt says she will work closely with Holt over the next six months to make the transition as smooth as possible.
