Joseph injured in Red Wings victory

Posted: Thursday, February 12, 2004

DETROIT Steve Yzerman scored twice, lifting the Detroit Red Wings past the San Jose Sharks 4-2 Wednesday night in what could be a costly victory.

Goaltender Curtis Joseph sprained his right ankle and was replaced by Manny Legace to start the second period. The Sharks' Jonathan Cheechoo tripped and fell into Joseph's legs in the first period, knocking him to the ice.

Joseph had surgery on Aug. 19, to remove bone chips from his right ankle.

It was Detroit's first game after losing Dominik Hasek for the remainder of the season with an injured groin. That made Joseph the Red Wings' unquestioned No. 1 goaltender, but now he could be sidelined again.

Blue Jackets 3, Kings 2 OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio David Vyborny scored 1:58 into overtime. The loss snapped the Kings' season-best seven-game unbeaten streak.

Columbus, unbeaten (7-0-1-0) in its last eight games against Los Angeles, also beat the Kings in overtime the last time the teams met in Columbus.

Rangers 3, Devils 1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Mike Dunham had 28 saves and the Rangers earned their first regulation win over the Devils in almost three years.

Defensemen Tom Poti and Boris Mironov scored first-period goals and Dan LaCouture scored on a second-period wraparound against Martin Brodeur. That gave the Rangers only their third regular-season win (3-21-13) over New Jersey since 1997.

Oilers 5, Thrashers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta Shawn Horcoff and Raffi Torres each had a goal and an assist in a game that ended with a wild brawl.

Atlanta goalie Pasi Nurminen was ejected in the final minutes for fighting with Edmonton goalie Ty Conklin during the melee. The Thrashers finished with no goalie, because starter Byron Dafoe injured his groin earlier in the game.

At 18:11 of the third period, the brawl erupted in the neutral zone near the Atlanta bench. Everyone on the ice paired up.

Things got bizarre when Serge Aubin tossed Oilers rookie Mike Bishai into the Atlanta bench. Bishai got to his legs and continued to trade punches with Aubin, while stunned Thrashers looked on unsure what to do.

All 12 players on the ice received fighting majors and all but one received a game misconduct. Conklin and Nurminen also got minors for leaving the crease.

Blackhawks 5, Predators 2

CHICAGO Steve Sullivan, Alex Zhamnov and Bryan Berard each had a goal and an assist. Mark Bell and Ryan VandenBussche also scored for the Blackhawks, who chased All-Star goalie Tomas Vokoun midway through the second period. Chicago has won three of its last four games.

Denis Arkhipov and Adam Hall scored for the Predators, who have lost three straight and allowed 14 goals during that span.

Stars 4, Islanders 4

DALLAS Bill Guerin scored with 6.2 seconds left in regulation as the Stars stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games.

Rookie Trent Hunter gave the Islanders a 4-3 edge with 1:47 remaining on his 20th goal. Hunter scored on a backhand rebound off a shot by Oleg Kvasha, who had a goal and three assists.

Mighty Ducks 5, Coyotes 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. Vaclav Prospal scored his 10th goal in 11 games to put Anaheim ahead and added three assists.

Rookie Joffrey Lupul and Petr Sykora each had a goal and an assist, and Steve Rucchin had three assists for Anaheim. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 22 saves for only his second victory in his last 10 starts.

Flames 3, Canucks 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Jarome Iginla scored 28 seconds into the third period. Iginla, who scored twice in Calgary's 5-2 victory over Atlanta one night earlier, skated out of the corner and wired a low wrist shot that beat Dan Cloutier to the short side. The puck bounced off the post and went in.

The Flames' captain, who also assisted on Craig Conroy's goal in the first period, has scored eight of his team-best 27 goals in the last six games.
