Longtime Nikiski resident Curt Duane Morris died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, of a rare lung and heart disease at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 58.

Memorial services will be held in early spring

Mr. Morris was born June 3, 1947, in Klamath Falls, Ore. He moved to Anchorage in 1962 and graduated from West High School on June 3, 1965. He worked as a baker and bakery manager at the Carr’s Food Center in Anchorage from 1963 to 1971. He moved to Glennallen with his family, where he operated and was co-owner of Copper Basin Distributors until 1977. In June 1977, the family moved to Nikiski, where he owned and operated M & M Supermarket until the fall of 1983. He then worked as a Realtor from 1984 to 1993. He returned as owner of M & M Market in 1993 until 2003. In 2005, he became the general manager for the Radio Shack stores in Kenai and Soldotna and continued as general manager until his death.

Mr. Morris was the second vice president of the Pioneers of Alaska, Igloo 33, a past president of the Nikiski Chamber of Commerce, a past president of the Kenai Board of Realtors, and was a member of the Wells Fargo Kenai advisory board.

Prior to moving to Nikiski, Mr. Morris was an avid hunter. More recently, he enjoyed playing golf, snowmachining and exploring Alaska in his personal airplane. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

“Curt was a fun-loving dad, a faithful husband, a friend and mentor to many people he worked with and was friends with. He was well respected by many people in the business community. He met life’s challenges with strong determination and succeeded. He enjoyed vacations with his family and golf and NASCAR trips with his friends and family. Curt was a dog lover and enjoyed spending time with his two dogs, Brandy and Belle. He was a kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who where fortunate enough to know and love him,” the family wrote

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Cadden; father, Chester Morris; and sister, Virginia Dudley. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Karen Morris of Nikiski; son, Rick Morris of Kenai; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Felix Martinez of Nikiski; granddaughter, Celina Martinez of Nikiski; brother, James Vaden of Las Vegas, Nev.; step-mother, Beverly Morris of Loomis, Calif.; sisters, Lynn Duby of Truckee, Calif. and Jill Donahoo of Folsom, Cali.; aunts, Arla Heath of Klamath Falls, Ore. and Charlotte Dennis of Mt. Airy, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like memorial contributions to go to Hospice of the Central Peninsula, P.O. Box 2584 Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
