Kenai girls thump Mariners, stay perfect in region

The Kenai girls basketball team, ranked seventh in the latest prep poll, kept on rolling with a 48-32 Region III/4A victory over host Homer Saturday night.

The Kardinals ran their record to 5-0 in the region and 12-1 overall.

Kenai won using a balanced scoring attack and tough defense. Jessi Reilly, with 12 points, was the only Kardinal in double figures, but five other players scored for Kenai.

The Kardinals held Homer to just eight total points in the second and third quarters. Meanwhile, Kenai was scoring 21 points in the middle 16 minutes of the game to grab control of the contest.

Homer boys 69, Kenai 59

The Mariners outpaced the Kardinals in a Region III/4A game in Homer.

The Kardinals entered the fourth quarter facing a 20-point deficit, and while Kenai rallied to outscore the Mariners by 10 in the final, Homer's lead proved to be too much to overcome.

Sean Haynes led the Mariners with 18 points while three other teammates scored in double-digits.

Joel Reemtsma scored 21 points for that Kardinals and Marcus Webster sunk 20.

Skyview boys 58, Seward 45

Skyview shooters found their range in the fourth quater, outscoring the Seahawks 22-11 in the final frame for a nonregion win.

Dan Davis got the job done down low for the Panthers with 21 points while Nolan Rose dished out 10 assists to go with his 16 points. Matt Burdick chipped in with 10 points for Skyview.

Ryan Lewis scored nine points to lead the Seahawks' offense.

Skyview matched Seward basket for basket through the first half, even taking a two-point lead at the break, but the Seahwaks opened the second half on a 21-4 run.

Erin Carr sparked the Seward run, scoring 10 of her team-high 13 points in the third quarter.

Skyview's Angel Binder led all scorers with 14 points while teammate Erika Edwards knocked down 10 points.

The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 21-10 in the third quarter on their way to a District 3/3A win over Seward.

David Holloway sparked the Nikiski run with nine points in the third quarter. Holloway scored 17 points for the Bulldogs before fouling out in the third quarter.

Jamie Queen led all scorers with 19 points for the Bulldogs while teammate Scott Carlosn chipped in with 17.

Kosta Gyfleas led the Seahawks with 17 points.

Nikiski downed Heritage Christian in a District 3/3A meeting in Nikiski.

Laura Berdahl led the Bulldogs with 19 points while six of her teammates also made it into the scoring column.

The Bulldogs led by a point, 9-8, after the first quarter, but went on a 10-2 run in the second period for a 19-10 halftime lead.

Berdahl netted eight more points in the third quarter as the Bulldogs continued to extend their lead, outscoring the Eagles 20-6 during the period.

Dana Jack paced the Heritage effort with 11 points.

The Kardinals and Panthers staged yet another cat-and-dog fight with Kenai prevailing for its first Region III/4A win of the season.

After trailing 21-7 in the first period, the Skyview rallied to take a one-point lead, but Joel Reemtsma and Kyle Oldring each knocked down a late bucket, and Marcus Webster hit four free throws to give the Kardinals the win.

Reemtsma led the Kardinals with 18 points while Oldring netted 14 and Webster scored 11. Nolan Rose scored a game-high 19 points for the Panthers, including a 3-pointer that cut the Kardinals lead to three in the closing minute.
