The Kenny Lake hockey team upset Homer 3-1 Thursday in the opening round of the Greatland Hockey Conference Tournament at the Brett Memorial Arena in Wasilla.
Homer was seeded second in the seven-team tournament, while Kenny Lake was seeded seventh.
The Mariners, who outshot the Hawks 29-19, took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Keith Bell scored on assists from Justin Adams and Nate Miller.
That lead crumbled in a big way in the third period. The Hawks scored three goals in the last 7:48 in the game to shock the Mariners. Garrett Butler had two goals and an assist for Kenny Lake, while Ben Kramer picked up the other goal and also added an assist.
Jonathon Bruss came up huge in the goal for the Hawks, making 28 saves. Ben Miller had 16 saves for Homer.
Delta Junction 8, Nikiski 3
Jared Crevisten had two goals and four assists as the Huskies used a dominant first period to take a first-round game at the Greatland Hockey Conference tournament Thursday at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla. Ben Blais added a hat trick and Lowen Ewing had a goal and two assists for the Huskies.
Nikiski trailed 4-3 heading into the third period, but in the final period Delta outscored Nikiski 4-0 by outshooting them 32-8.
The Bulldogs scored first in the first period, with Nick Russell lighting the lamp on assists from Mike O'Brien and Jabin Flemsburg. After Delta took a 2-1 lead, Brett Allemann scored on assists from O'Brien and Russell to tie the game before the end of the first period.
Delta expanded its lead to 4-2 in the second period, but Allemann scored again before the end of the second period on an assist from Zach Womack to make it 4-3.
Luke Hardesty made 48 saves for Nikiski, while Grant Geise had 25 saves for Delta.
Greatland announces postseason honors
Wade Williams of Houston was named the Most Valuable Player of the Greatland Conference Thursday. Also on the first team were goalie Paul Sutton-Jones of Houston, defensemen James Hundley of Houston, Alex Trieweiler of Homer, Cole Titus of Monroe and Greg Cooley of Kenny Lake, and forwards Jared Crevisten of Delta, Michael Andre of Monroe, Rick Morlock of Houston, Scott Owen of Homer, Ben Blais of Delta and Larry Kincaid of Houston.
Honorable mention went to Justin Adams of Homer, Ryan Gilbertson of Delta, Brett Allemann of Nikiski, Louie Oliva of Nikiski, Ben Jordan of Tri-Valley, Mitchell O'Bryant of Monroe, Sam DeBlauw of Tri-Valley, Ben Kramer of Kenny Lake, Travis Brown of Homer and Max Drathman of Homer.
