Dimond comes back to edge West Valley

The Wolfpack and the Lynx opened the tournament with a dandy of a game as West Valley scored first, then did all it could to try to hold off the powerful Dimond squad before falling 2-1 at the Soldotna Sports Center in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

The Lynx were able to score a pair of goals in the second period, though, to earn a berth in today's championship semifinals.

Buck Healy put the Wolfpack on the board with an unassisted goal 3:58 into the first period.

Dimond equalized with a power-play goal in the second period, scored by Keegan Brees with assists from Luke Holtshouser and Ryan Schank.

The Lynx got the go-ahead goal with 3:46 to play in the second period on a tally by Brian Carr, assisted by Nick Davis.

John Sitton made 13 saves for Dimond while West Valley goalie was called on for 31 saves.

West Valley will play in today's consolation bracket game.

Service 9, Wasilla 1

Wasilla scored a quick goal to start the second period that cut the Cougars' lead to a goal, 2-1, but Service overpowered the Warriors to advance to today's championship semifinals.

Paul Duffy scored three goals for the Cougars and Collin Long had a goal and two assists.

Eric Zehnder scored Wasilla's goal.

Wasilla goalie Ronnie Walker stopped 51 of 60 shots.

Chugiak 9, Lathrop 1

The Mustangs got three goals and two assists from Phillip Derouin to advance to the championship semifinals.

Jason Shaffer also had two goals for the Chugiak, and goalie Bryce Christianson stopped nine shots for the win.

Sean MacDonald scored for the Malemutes.
