Ninilchik boys, girls sweep own tournament

Posted: Sunday, February 13, 2005

The Ninilchik Wolverines swept their own Ninilchik Invitational basketball tournament Saturday afternoon at Ninilchik School.

The girls received a completely balanced scoring effort again while thumping the Unalaska Raiders 85-33.

"I think it is the best basketball we've played this season," Ninilchik girls coach Dan Leman said. "Our teamwork, ball movement, and defense was outstanding."

Jen Erickson led the Wolverines with 17 points and Emily Wood added 15. Most valuable player Kendra Moerlein pitched in nine points along with Lauren Wolford, who also scored nine.

Leman also credited his bench for solid play through the tournament.

The Wolverines boys team needed two overtimes to get past a scrappy Unalaska Raiders team, though. The Wolverines came from behind by as many as 10 points near the end of the third quarter to take the lead late in the fourth, but Unalaska recaptured the lead 43-42 in the final seconds of the game.

Boys MVP John Nichols fouled out for Unalaska, though, sending Connor Cooper of Ninilchik to the free-throw line, where he went 1-of-2 to tie the game at 43 and send the game into the first overtime.

"Getting (John) Nichols out of the game was a big factor for us," Ninilchik boys coach Keith Presley said "Their (Unalaska) reserves came up big, though."

The Unalaska boys were able to force a second overtime by knotting the score at 50, after scoring the final five points of the extra period and picking up numerous offensive rebounds.

Ninilchik came out in the second overtime fired up, though. Cooper scored six points and Ninilchik held a 60-50 advantage with under a minute left.

Unalaska responded with two quick buckets to cut it to 60-55, but Javin Halpin went 3-of-4 from the foul line to seal the game as Ninilchik went on to 63-57 victory.

Halpin finished with a game-high 26 points leading the Wolverines, while Cooper added 17.

Seldovia boys 64, Valdez JV 51

The Seldovia Sea Otters picked up a nonconference victory in consolation action Saturday at Ninilchik high school.

The Sea Otters received a game-high 30 points from Evan Mickelson in the win, while Colton Collier added 17.

Ninilchik girls 91, Northway 28

The Wolverines beat the Northway Warriors — who filled in the vacant slot left over from not having a girls team from Seldovia — in dominant fashion as nearly every player scored Friday.

Kendra Moerlein had 18 points and Emily Wood added 15 to lead the Wolverines.

Ninilchik boys 60, Seldovia 47

The Wolverines pulled away in the second half to beat Southcentral Conference opponent Seldovia 60-47 Friday.

The Wolverines outscored the Sea Otters 38-24 in the second half, including 21-12 in the fourth quarter.

Javin Halpin led the Wolverines with a game-high 19 points, while Connor Cooper and Josh Klapack each pitched in 14 points.

The Sea Otters were led by Colton Collier's 18 points and Jimmie Payton's 17.
