Girls state wrestling held in Sitka
Soldotna’s Monica Hutchison and Michaela Hutchison won titles Saturday at the United States Girls Wrestling Association Alaska State Championships Open on Saturday in Sitka.
The sixth annual version of the event drew 61 wrestlers, some coming from as far away as Kodiak and Bethel. The event was organized by Sitka High School senior Abby Gillaspie, assisted by her father, Steve, the former head wrestling coach at Nikiski High School.
Friday, the girls got a chance to do tours around the Sitka area. Then, the girls participated in a clinic with 2004 Olympians Sara McMann and Tela O’Donnell, who is from Homer.
Saturday, the athletes competed in three divisions for a total of 18 championships. The results follow:
Elementary winners Pool 1, Sydney Riggs, Sitka; Pool 2, Sydney Brown, Skagway; Pool 3, Kirsten Stockel, Sitka; Pool 4, Chelsea Roehl, Fairbanks.
Middle school winners Pool 2, Kaylie O’Daniel, Skagway; Pool 3, Annette Highley, Juneau; Pool 4, Rori Leaverton, Skagway; Pool 5, Monica Hutchison, Soldotna; Pool 6, Leah Francis, Juneau; Pool 7, Crissy Elliott, Bethel.
