Homer boys claim Ninilchik Invite crown

The Homer boys and the Northway girls won the Ninilchik Invitational on Saturday.

Both the Ninilchik and Homer boys finished the tournament with an undefeated record, but Homer won the tournament based on a points-allowed tiebreaker.

The Ninilchik boys finished up an undefeated run through the Ninilchik Invitational on Saturday by defeating Tri-Valley 51-28. Jack Wheeler had 18 points for the Wolverines, while Sam Bennett had 11 and Scott Goins added 10.

Earlier in the day, the Mariners had finished up their perfect run through the tournament with a 66-38 victory over Nikolaevsk. Sam Reinert and Devon Kennelty each had 12 for the Mariners, while Jonathan Jester added 10. For Nikolaevsk, Mark Fefelov had 18 and Eric Mametieff had 10.

In Saturday girls action, Homer defeated Nikolaevsk 51-20. Ashley Ketelle had 12 points for Homer.

Also, Tri-Valley topped Ninilchik 46-19. Windy Gore had 19 for Tri-Valley, while Kristen Scholten added 16. Alicia Ehlers had six points to lead the Wolverines.

In Friday girls action, Tri-Valley topped Nikolaevsk 57-49 behind 36 points from Kristen Scholten. Windy Gore added 16 for the Viking Warriors.

Also Friday, Northway defeated Homer 34-28 to finish the tournament undefeated. Homer had a 21-19 lead after three quarters, but the Warriors owned the fourth quarter. Krystal Edens paced Homer with eight points.

For Nikolaevsk, Nianella Dorvall had 16, while Sophia Kalugin had 15 and Kilina Klaich added 11.

In Friday boys action, Homer cruised past Northway 75-14. Quinn Daugherty led a balanced Homer attack with 12 points, while Jonathan Jester had 11 and Devon Kennelty had 10. Brandon Teasdale had 10 for Northway.

Also Friday, Tri-Valley defeated Nikolaevsk 50-43. Liam Juhl had 21 points for the Viking Warriors, while Nate MacMaster added 11 points. For the Warriors, Mark Fefelov had 15 points, while Blake Klaich added 10 points.

Kodiak girls 65, Skyview 17

The Bears cruised to a Northern Lights Conference victory over the Panthers on Friday.

Joanna Garcia and Puni Timu each had 14 points for the Bears, who led 26-6 after the first quarter. Stefay Malatesta had 10 points for the Panthers.

Skyview boys 61 Kodiak 54, OT

The visiting Panthers recovered from a furious comeback by the Bears in order to take a Northern Lights Conference victory on Friday.

Senior Austin Cowley, who finished with 20 points, made a pair of free throws with 16.4 seconds left to tie the game at 51. Kodiak had been down nine points with one minute left.

The Panthers had four shots within 5 feet to win the game, but could not avoid overtime.

Skyview was able to take control of the game in overtime. Nic Madrid, who would finish with a game-high 23 points, hit two foul shots to give the Panthers a 53-51 lead they would not relinquish just 42 seconds into overtime.

Kodiak dressed only five players because five players missed the game due to disciplinary reasons, according to the Kodiak Daily Mirror. Two players fouled out in overtime and the Bears finished the game with just three players.

Jordan Jones had 12 points for Skyview, while Josh Obas had 11 for Kodiak.

Kodiak girls 55, Skyview 8

The Bears cruised to a nonconference victory on Saturday in Kodiak. Joanna Garcia led Kodiak with 10 points.

Skyview boys 58, Kodiak 41

The Panthers earned the weekend sweep on the Rock with a nonconference victory on Saturday.

DJ Diaz poured in 21 points for the Panthers, while Albert White added 16.

Dean Cummings Tournament

The Seward boys basketball team defeated Delta 61-39 on Saturday to win the Dean Cummings Tournament at Delta.

Keenan Prochazka had 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead Seward, which led 28-22 at the half and took control with a 15-9 third quarter. Also for the Seahawks, Michael Thorn had 13, Andrew Buchanan had 12 and Jalen Terry had 10. Prochazka was the MVP, while Thorn made the all-tourney team and Buchanan was the defensive player of the tournament.

The Cook Inlet Academy girls lost the championship 49-46 to Galena. The Eagles outscored Galena 17-10 in the fourth, but couldn't complete the comeback.

MVP Jenna Buchanan had 33 for Galena on 14-of-19 shooting from the field. For CIA, Megan Bauder had 15, Tiana McGahan had 11 and Kelsie Leaf had 10. Bauder and Leaf made the all-tourney team.

The CIA boys finished eighth with a 57-47 loss to Unalaska on Saturday. Matthew Moffis made the all-tourney team for the Eagles.

The Seward girls finished fourth by beating Unalaska 66-11. Emily Draper was the defensive player of the tournament, while Jessica Stallings and Chelsey Clarke made the all-tournament team.

On Friday, the Cook Inlet girls advanced to the finals with a 46-32 victory over Delta Junction. The Eagles grabbed a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and built on that lead. Kelsie Leaf had 23 points for CIA, while Megan Bauder added 10. For Delta, Jess Reiter had 14 points.

In girls consolation action, Seward topped Bethel 48-32. Emily Draper had 12 points for the Seahawks, while Chelsey Clarke had 11 and Jessica Stallings had 12.

In Friday boys action, the Seward boys advanced to the tourney finals by thumping Bethel 90-51. Keenan Prochazka had six 3-pointers en route to 26 points to lead the Seahawks, while Andrew Buchanan had 21 points and Jalen Terry added 14.

In consolation action, the North Pole junior varsity topped Cook Inlet Academy 41-35. Cody Munn paced the Eagles with 11 points.
