Writers night accepting submissions

Submissions are being accepted for the fifth annual Central Peninsula Writers Night, a showcase of work created by central peninsula authors, until 5 p.m. Feb. 22.

Collected works from participating authors will be read at the Writers Night on March 15 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center and compiled in a booklet that will be available for purchase.

Entries may be dropped off at the visitors center or mailed to 11471 Kenai Spur Highway, Kenai, AK 99611.

Boys and Girls Clubs promote literacy

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula will hold its annual Read Across America Celebration from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 1 at the Kenai Clubhouse, 11247 Frontage Road. Attendees will be able to participate in a series of 15-minute stations promoting literacy and the love of reading, including a workshop for parents to help their children become better readers.

Pizza and juice will be served, and door prizes will be awarded. There is no charge for the event. The public is encouraged to attend. For more information, call Mary Jo at 283-2682.

Submissions sought for magazine

The University of Alaska Southeast is accepting poetry and short story submissions for its literary magazine, Explorations 2002. A total of $2,200 will be given to the winning entries. Submissions must be postmarked by March 15.

An additional award of $500 will be given for a short story, poem or translation of a traditional story by an Alaska Native writer who focuses on Alaska Native themes.

Poems are limited to 60 lines each and stories are limited to 3,000 words each. The author's name, address and two or three lines of biography should be on the back of each first page of submissions. The reader-entry fee is $6 for one or two poems and $3 for each additional poem. The fee for each short story is $6. Checks should be made out to "UAS Explorations."
