Posted: Thursday, February 14, 2002

Hometown: Forest City, Fla.

Lives: Charlotte, N.C.

Job: Crew chief for Jeff Gordon's No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports

2002 record: Six victories, 18 top-fives and 24 top-10s to win the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship

Career record: 12 wins, 49 top-fives, 100 top-10s and $22,436,092 in winnings

Personal notes: Started his racing career as a crew chief at the New Smyrna Speedway and Orlando Speedworld in Florida. Packed up and went to Charlotte to chase his dream of working on the Winston Cup Series. Got his first break working for Richard Petty. When offered the job with Gordon, Petty warned Loomis it would be stressful, but he agreed it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Curious habits: He's so frugal, officials with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. constantly had to encourage him to use room service and other amenities as their guest during the NASCAR Awards Banquet.
