ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Alaska Marine Highway is cutting most passenger fares in April by 49 percent.
Reservations for the April rides must be made by March 31.
Outside visitors begin arriving in large numbers by May and stay into September, said Capt. George Capacci, general manager of the Marine Highway. The rest of the year is known as ''Alaska Time,'' when it's the locals who are likely to be riding the ferries, he said.
The ferry system has cut riders' costs for that off-season by eliminating the fare for drivers whose vehicles are aboard the ferries, for example. The new discount goes further still, said Capacci.
''I wanted something additional for the last month of 'Alaska Time' and felt a 49 percent discount for travel within the 49th state made sense,'' Capacci said.
