CIA boys take Bristol Bay tourney

The Cook Inlet Academy boys basketball team won the Bristol Bay Tournament last weekend, defeating Sand Point 75-31, King Cove 54-42 and Bristol Bay 55-42. Blake Gabriel and Jeremy Franchino were named to the all-tournament team for the Eagles.

The CIA girls lost to King Cove 49-47 and Bristol Bay 49-34 and finished third at the tournament. Alyse Bell made the all-tournament team. The Bristol Bay girls won the tournament.

VanMeter, Carr in second

Dusty VanMeter of Kasilof and Mark Carr of Kenai were in second place in the Tesoro Iron Dog snowmachine race as of late Monday night.

Carr and VanMeter got into McGrath at 10:26 a.m. Monday, 10 minutes behind the race leaders. McGrath is 668 miles into the 2,000-mile race, which is being run for a purse of $75,000 and goes from Wasilla to Nome and back. Carr and VanMeter are the defending champions in the race.

Also from the peninsula, Chet Williams of Anchor Point and Sacha Gros of Anchorage were in ninth place after getting into McGrath at 12:51 p.m.

In three seasons with Tampa, Sosa is 11-26 with a 5.17 ERA.

He's pitched in 103 games, starting 41.

Cruz was acquired by the Athletics from Atlanta in the Tim Hudson trade in December. He was 6-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 50 relief outings last season.

Cruz asked for a raise from $370,000 to $860,000, while Oakland offered $600,000. Arbitrators Jack Clarke, Janet Gaunt and Stephen Goldberg were expected to decide Tuesday.
