Kenai boys top Palmer, Nikiski girls upset Seward

The Kenai boys basketball team battled back on the road against a tough Palmer defense Friday to defeat the Moose 60-50 in Region III/4A play.

Kenai was led in scoring by senior Steve Steiner, who hit three treys and went 13-of-18 from the foul line. Most of Steiner's points came in the fourth period, where the Kardinals scored 26 points to Palmer's 13.

Caleb Schooley added 13 points, including two three pointers, and junior Geoffrey Gemmel had 12 points.

Palmer girls 41, Kenai 35

Kenai dropped the first of a two-game road trip to Palmer Friday in Region III/4A play.

Senior Sarah McLeod led the Kardinals with 10 points.

Kodiak boys 75, Skyview 64

The Skyview boys basketball team collected a loss in Kodiak Friday in Region III/4A play. The Panthers were outscored throughout much of the game, but were unable to capitalize on a fourth-period run of points.

Matt Travers was the leading Skyview scorer earing 21 points, including two 3-point goals. Junior Adam Cooper added 17 points in the loss.

Skyview girls 46, Kodiak 41

The Skyview girls were able to hold off a fourth-quarter surge by the Bears to defeat Kodiak Friday in Kodiak in Region III/4A play.

Jenny Carpenter led all scoring with 19 points.

Nikiski girls 45, Seward 39

The Bulldogs went into Seward and stole a win Friday, defeating the top-ranked Seahawks 45-39 in District 3/3A play. It was the first loss Seward had to a Class 3A team this year.

Seniors Karen Rabung and Hisa Miyara were Nikiski's high scorers with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Each included a 3-pointer in their scoring.

Seward junior Breanna Bardarson also scored 14 points.

Soldotna girls 46, Colony 44

Visiting Soldotna barely squeaked by Colony Friday to keep alive their undefeated record.

Stars senior Rachel Besse led all scoring with 29 points, as Soldotna held onto the lead during a Colony comeback attempt in the fourth quarter.
