Soldotna girls escape overtime test against Palmer

Posted: Sunday, February 16, 2003

Soldotna's girls narrowly escaped an overtime defeat at the hands of a quickly surging Palmer Moose hoops squad Saturday in Palmer.

After two quarters of play, Soldotna was down a point, having been played bucket-for-bucket by the Moose. Following the intermission, however, the Stars took the lead and opened up the game, closing the third period with a six-point cushion over Palmer.

In the fourth, the Moose began to come alive and rattled off six buckets to get back even with Soldotna, and held the Stars to only two field goals. When regulation ticked off the clock, the score was tied at 48.

Soldotna hunkered down on defense in bonus play and prevented Palmer from making any more field goals, while adding key buckets and foul shots from seniors Jennifer Senette and Rachel Besse to win.

Besse led all scoring with 27 points. Senette added 12 points, including a 3-point bucket, and Hillary Zobeck had 13 points.

The Stars remain unbeaten with a season record of 20-0.
