Reserve celebrates 5th anniversary, plans workshop

The Kachemak Bay Research Reserve (KBRR) has much to celebrate this year. Thursday marked the five-year anniversary of KBRR's designation as the 23rd National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Today, there are 26 of these unique estuaries around the country dedicated to long-term research and coastal education. Late last year, research reserve staff moved into new offices, labs and educational spaces at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center on the Homer Bypass.

Reserve staff are involved in many regional, state and federal collaborative research projects in environments extending from streams that enter the estuary to the offshore marine environment.

On March 17, the reserve will host a coastal dynamics workshop to help policy-makers and land-use planners develop strategies for addressing shoreline erosion on the western Kenai Peninsula. Reserve education staff are preparing for a busy spring environmental education season and planning summer activities for the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center.

The reserve also welcomes new staff oceanographer, Scott Pegau, to the position of research coordinator and Terry Thompson, the education coordinator, into a temporary stint as acting manager until a new manager is hired.

The reserve can be reached by its long-time phone number, (907) 235-4799, or its new mailing address, 95 Sterling Highway, suite 2, Homer, AK 99603.
