The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post. No. 10046 is sponsoring its 36th annual American Flag Poetry contest. The contest is open to students in grades one through eight, who will be judged for monetary awards in six different age groups. Poems must be original creations about the American flag composed solely by the student, with no corrections in spelling or punctuation marks and submitted in the student's own handwriting. Typewritten poems will be accepted only from disabled children. Submissions must include student's name, address, school, grade and teacher's name on the back and are due by March 1. Spenards Builders Supply is offering a $2,000 to $4,000 scholarship to assist an Alaska high school senior in pursuing a vocational career for the benefit of Alaska's future. High school seniors who are graduating from any Alaska public school are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Applicants must have at least a 2.6 grade point average, be currently enrolled in, or have completed vocational courses, and have well-defined vocational goals with realistic plans to achieve those goals. The deadline for applying for the 2004 SBS Scholarship is April 15, and a recipient will be announced by no later than May 15. For more information, call Pat Anderson at (907) 261-9150.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is sponsoring two, full-year tuition waiver scholarships for the 2004-05 school year. One will provide a year of tuition at Alaska Vocational Technical Center and one will apply at Kenai Peninsula College. The scholarships apply to this year's 2004 graduating seniors. Applications are available at www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/voced/default.htm or by contacting high school counselors. Applications must be postmarked by March 5.
