In the game of Blackjack the "Perfect Hand" is 21. As I reflect back on my children's education over the past 21 years and with the youngest in the family scheduled to graduate in May, my three children have truly been dealt the "Perfect Hand" by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.
Twenty-one years ago we dropped our daughter Jenna off at Redoubt Elementary and were greeted by Judy Devito with a smile and reassurance that they would take good care of our daughter as she shooed us out the door. Little did we know that the district would not only do a good job of taking care of our three children, it did an outstanding job. The teachers, administrators, coaches, directors and support staff both past and present at Redoubt Elementary, Soldotna Middle School and Soldotna High School provided our children with a world class opportunity to learn and prepared them to do well both in the world of work as well has in their next step in education. This highly trained group of professionals gave my three children a strong background in the core areas as well has introducing them into the technical world they would soon be stepping into. Because of this effort, all three of my children have had the opportunity to go onto some form of higher education well prepared and with scholarship support from an extremely giving community/state.
The lessons learned within the many activity programs that our district offers also gave my children the teaming/goal setting abilities to be successful in any situation. Activities provided the ability to problem solve as a team, which is a must in our business/working world today. My children have had the opportunity to perform in Disney World, Disney Land and Branson Mo.; all three have played on state championship teams over a 12-year period and most importantly have had a lot of fun learning and working with some of finest young people in our state/country. Our youth who walk through our schools here truly are our greatest resource. I am proud to say that our Borough has made them its highest priority by funding our schools and taking care of our buildings in a first class manner. Without that level of support, this would have been an impossible task.
If you have not had the privilege of visiting one of our 44 schools throughout our school district, I would highly recommend you doing so. I also have a wish for you and your family that you too are dealt the "Perfect Hand" as your children enter one of many outstanding schools throughout the district. As we close a chapter in our life as a family, I would like to send out a special thank you to Redoubt, Soldotna Middle and Soldotna High School for the many hours of dedication and hard work towards proving my children and all the others the very best education possible.
