Committee urges public to be ready for disaster
Editor's Note: The following weekly column is designed to help answer residents' questions about the Kenai Peninsula Borough and its government.
Question: What is the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC)?
Answer: The LEPC is composed of volunteers from the general public, government and private organizations. This group's primary function is to encourage the public to prepare for the wide range of disasters that could occur on the Kenai Peninsula. This includes oil and hazardous materials, earthquakes, wild land fires, floods, volcanic ash, avalanches and tsunamis.
The LEPC distributes brochures, videotapes and other types of information to the general public at fairs, home and sport shows; conducts training and supports other agencies or organizations in providing the public with information to encourage their personal and family preparedness.
