New Soldotna officer to be sworn in today

Jesse 'Skip' Brazel Jr. joins department

Soldotna residents are invited to the swearing-in ceremony at 3 p.m. today of Soldotna's newest police officer. The ceremony will be at the Soldotna Police Department.

Jesse "Skip" Brazel Jr., 52, recently completed a two-week Department of Public Safety academy training session in Sitka and is now in his field-training phase in Soldotna.

Officer Brazel was a deputy sheriff with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department in Arizona for 20 years and has been a officer with other Arizona police departments for five years.

With the sheriff's department, he was responsible for the implementation and instruction of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program for grades kindergarten through 10th grade in six county school districts and hosted a "DARE on the Air" radio show.

Brazel served as an aircraft armament systems specialist in the Air Force Reserve for 24 years and was a law enforcement specialist in the U.S. Air Force for six years. He also served as a voice radio operator in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years.

Brazel received the Cochise County Sheriff's Department Deputy of the Year award in 1987; the Cochise County Sheriff's Department Officer of the Year award through the Elks Lodge in 1993; and the Arizona state DARE Officer of the Year award in 1995.
