Kenny Lake rips Nikiski

The Nikiski High School hockey team suffered an 8-3 setback at the hands of Kenny Lake to open the Greatland Conference tournament Thursday at Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

Kenny Lake led 3-1 after the first, and double that to 6-2 after two. The Hawks added two more in the final period. Cody Oatman netted a hat trick for Kenny Lake.

Matt Kester tallied in the first period for the Bulldogs, assisted by Dan Gerhauser. Mario Bird scored twice for Nikiski, netting an unassisted goal in the second period and opening the third period with a tally, assisted by Quincy Bird and Seth Tauriainen.

Kenny Lake will face Delta Junction today in the semifinals. Nikiski will receive a bye through Friday's consolation bracket and will play for fourth place Saturday at 1 p.m.

Glennallen defeated Tri-Valley 11-5 to advance to Friday's 7 p.m. semifinal. Judd Vierson scored six goals for the Panthers while teammate Zach Tollman netted three goals and six assists.

Houston capped the opening day of play with an 8-0 win over Monroe. Jake Williams netted the hat trick for the Hawks.
