Posted: Wednesday, February 18, 2004

The Alaska Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of the Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post No. 10046 is sponsoring the American Flag Poetry program.

Students in grades one through eight are eligible to enter. Poems must be an original creation about the American flag, composed solely by the student with no corrections in spelling or punctuation marks and in the students' own handwriting. Typewritten poems will be accepted only from handicapped students. The student's name, address, school, grade and teacher's name must be on the back or the poem will be disqualified. Monetary awards will be awarded on a local level in six different age categories.

Interest students can obtain applications from their schools, and home-schooled students' entries may be submitted directly to VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post No. 10046, 134 N. Birch St., Soldotna, AK 99669. The deadline is March 1. For more information, call 262-2819.
