On Feb. 10, the SMS Battle of the Books team participated in the district competition. Speaker Sophia Taeschner and recorder Tanya Guy competed all five rounds, with alternates taking turns as the third competing member or "brain" on the team. In the morning, the Spartan Team battled three times, winning all three rounds. They answered 48 questions on the 12 seventh- and eighth-grade battle books and scored enough points to qualify for the semifinals. In a close race for the final competition, including a "sudden death" tie breaker, the SMS team placed second in a three-way playoff with Voznesenka placing first and Connections placing third. In the consolation round for third and fourth place, the Spartan team battled Kenai Middle School and won by eight points. Congratulations to all the teams. The SMS team will receive the third-place plaque for the district; the second-place plaque goes to Voznesenka; and the first-place plaque goes to Homer Middle School.
Welcome to Tracy Withrow who recently joined the SMS staff. She will be available to provide assistance to staff regarding technology instruction during the second semester. She also will be researching and developing how we will best use technology next year to facilitate instruction and learning.
The SMS wrestling team will host a tournament this weekend. All of the borough teams will be involved, as well as a large team from Kodiak. The weekend kicks off with a varsity dual between Kodiak and SMS on Friday night. The student council has some fun things planned.
