Fundraiser to help local fight breast cancer

Supporters of breast cancer patient Anna Grant of Ninilchik, daughter of Alvin Steik host a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and dessert auction to raise money for her on March at 5 p.m., at the Ninilchik Fair Grounds in the community room. Kasilof special use area discussion coming

State Sen. Tom Wagoner hosts a meeting for the public to discuss the proposed Kasilof River Special Use Area with Rick Thompson, a Regional Land Manager from the state's Division of Mining, Land and Water on Feb. 26 at Tustumena Elementary School from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, call the senator's Kenai office at 283-7996.

Women's Heart Health Program starting

The Cooperative Extension Service will be offering the Strong Women -- Healthy Hearts Program, a 12-week nutrition and exercise program for women age 40 and over on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center beginning February 28. Pre-registration is required by February 20.

The series will be led by Linda Tannehill, Kenai Peninsula District Extension Agent with the University of Alaska Cooperative Extension Service. Contact the Cooperative Extension Service if interested in this free program by calling 262-5824.

Nominations open for conservation award

Nominations are being accepted for this year's Alaska Conservation Foundation Conservation Achievement Award. Each year the foundation selects and honors individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping to preserve Alaska. Awards are made in a range of categories: Outstanding Professional Contributions, Outstanding Volunteer Contributions, Young Environmental Activists, Outstanding Achievements by a Conservation Organization, Excellence in Environmental Education, Excellence in Still Photography, Film or Video and Outstanding Achievements by an Alaska Native Organization or Individual. Purple Heart vets meet

Chapter 830 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) holds monthly meetings the third Thursday of every month for combat wounded veterans. Meetings are held at 1 p.n. at the VFW in Soldotna.

SoHi softball meeting coming

There will be a Soldotna High School Softball meeting on Thursday, Feb. 17, 6 p.m., in the teacher's lounge at Soldotna High School. All girls interested in playing softball this year for SoHi need to be at this meeting. Parents need to attend also. For more information call 262-5189.

Community Dialogue on the Kasilof

The Friday Community Dialogue topic for Feb. 25 is "The Kasilof River Special Use Area: Finding the balance between public access and habitat protection." Optional potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. in the McLane Commons at Kenai Peninsula College, followed by dialogue from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday Dialogues bring people in the community together for listening, speaking and learning in an environment of respect for diverse opinions. Call for submissions

The Alaska Railroad Corporation is soliciting submissions for its annual commemorative artwork program. Submissions should be a thumbnail sketch no larger than 11 inches by 17 inches. The idea must include an Alaska Railroad theme in order to be considered, with additional consideration given to entries focusing on Seward. The chosen artist will be paid $3,000 in return for participation in signing events in Anchorage and Fairbanks. ARRC retains all rights to the artwork. Summer soccer registration open

The Boys and Girls Club is accepting registrations for outdoor soccer for ages 4 years through 12th grade. For grades 6 -- 12, the season runs from June 6 -- July 23, the cost is $70 and the registration deadline is April 15 at 4 p.m. For ages 4 years to 5th grade, the season runs from June 13 -- July 30. Cost is $60 and the registration deadline is April 22 at 4 p.m. The child must be 4 by April 22. All participants must be 2011 members. Membership cost is $10 for kindergarten and under, $75 for 1st -- 12th graders. Scholarships are available. Registrations are taken at the Kenai Recreation Center, or fax to 283-4675. Come play dodgeball

North Peninsula Recreation is accepting team registrations for its Adult Coed Dodgeball League. Registration deadline is March 11. League night will be Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. Season runs March 23 through April 27. For more information call 776-8800.

Week-long aviation camp in March

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is hosting a spring-break aviation camp, Challengers ACE Academy, for students in grades 8-11. The camp will have an orientation flight for all attendees, and include hands-on experience with Medallion flight simulator, wing design, forces of flight, weather and other aviation topics. CLCA is an approved vendor for Connections and IDEA. This camp will also satisfy many of the requirements for aviation related badges for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. ACE runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and costs $275. Participants should bring their own lunch. The Challenger center is located at 9711 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. Adult volleyball starting

North Peninsula Recreation is accepting team registrations for its Adult Coed Volleyball League. Registration deadline is March 11, so get your team together today! Games will be held on Mondays and Saturdays at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. Season starts March 21 and runs through the end of April. For more information please call 776-8800.

Public health center to close for holiday

The Kenai Public Health Center will be closed Monday, Feb. 21, in observance of Presidents' Day. The center will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. Call 335-3400 for more information.
