MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- The top two winners in this year's U.P. 200 Sled Dog Championship crossed the finish line just 11 minutes apart.
''I kept looking behind me,'' said winner Stan Passananti of Ely, Minn., who finished at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, pocketing $6,000 in his first try at the 12-dog race.
Keith Aili of Ray, Minn., a three-time winner of the race, finished the 240 mile race at 9:56 a.m. He took home $4,500. Another first-time competitor, Frank Teasley of Jackson, Wyo., placed third minutes later for $3,500.
Thirty-eight 12-dog teams, the largest field in the event's history, took off from downtown Marquette just before 8 p.m. Friday.
