Special Olympics athletes win medals

The Special Olympics Alaska 2001 State Winter Games drew nearly 300 athletes and volunteers to Anchorage Feb. 9-11. It was SOAK's largest state winter games ever.

The competitions included figure skating, speed skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and many athletes from around the peninsula participated and won medals.

Central peninsula winners:

Alpine skiing

Samantha Baker won three gold medals in downhill, slalom and giant slalom;

John McIntosh won a silver medal in the 15-meter glide;

Richard Reger won a gold medal and two silver medals in the downhill, slalom and giant slalom;

Joe Romig won three gold medals in downhill, slalom and giant slalom;

Jim Simons won a silver medal in the slalom and placed fourth and fifth in the giant slalom and the downhill events;

Elijah Stafford won two bronze medals for downhill and the giant slalom and placed fourth in the slalom.

Snowshoeing

Darla Mamaloff won three gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 50-meter snowshoeing events.

Robert Wilusz won a bronze medal in the 400-meter snowshoeing and placed fourth in the 200-meter and 800-meter snowshoeing events.

Homer winners:

Cross-country skiing

Erik Behnke won a gold medal for the 500-meter race, a bronze medal for the 3K and placed fourth in the 1K event;

Larry Benfiglie II won three gold medals for the 100-meter, 500-meter and 50-meter races;

Ivan Meganack won a gold medal in the 3K and silver medals in the 1K and 500-meter races.

Snowshoeing

Jolene Clark won a gold medal in the 100 meter, a silver medal in the 400 meter and a bronze medal in the 50 meter;

Jeremy Day won two gold medals in the 400 meter and the 800 meter and a silver medal in the 1,600 meter;

Emily Eller won a gold medal in the 400 meter and a silver medal in the 50 meter;

Shaunti Johnson won three gold medals in the 1,600 meter, the 5K and the 800 meter;

Robert Allen Reeves won a bronze medal in the 100 meter and placed fourth in both the 400 meter and the 50 meter.

Seward winners:

Snowshoeing

Joe Carr won three gold medals in the 100 meter, 200 meter and the 400 meter;

Richard Champion won a silver medal for the 50 meter and a bronze medal for the 100 meter;

Alex Faust won a silver medal for the 100 meter and a bronze medal for the 50 meter;

Chris Tarpey won a gold medal for the 400 meter and two silver medals for both the 100- and 200-meter races.
