FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The Fairbanks City Council approved a plan to disburse bed tax money to 23 local organizations.
The charities and nonprofit groups will share in more than $270,000. The money is part of about $2 million the city collected during 2002 from an 8 percent tax charged by local hotels and motels.
The six-person Bed Tax Committee sifted through the applications from organizations requesting some of the bed-tax discretionary funds. It then made its recommendation to the City Council, which unanimously approved the distribution plan.
The Fairbanks Art Association, which promotes arts development and education in the Interior, will get the biggest chunk of money -- more than $73,000 dollars.
The organization received $75,000 of the bed tax funds collected in 2001, and has consistently been at the top of the collection list.
