Painting group to meet
The Kenai Watercolor Group has informal painting gatherings at 11 a.m. every other Saturday at the Kenai Fine Arts Center on Cook Avenue in Kenai. The next meeting is Saturday. For more information, call Pam Mersch at 262-6403.
Talent show applications available
Applications are available for the 2004 Nikiski Talent Show to be held March 6. Forms can be picked up at Nikiski Middle-Senior High School, the Nikiski Post Office, M & M Market, Great Northern Video, in Kenai at Old Time Music, or call 776-3456 to have a form faxed to you.

Homer holds community conversation
The Pratt Museum will host a Community Conversation program at 6 p.m. Friday about community trails. The facilitator will be Deland Anderson.
Writing submissions accepted
Submissions are being accepted for the seventh annual Central Peninsula Writers' Night. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m. Feb. 27. Selected writers will be notified March 5.
There will be a rehearsal at 6 p.m. March 10 and Writers Night will be held at 7 p.m. March 11. Submission forms may be picked up at the Kenai Community Library or may be downloaded at kenai writer.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32.
Submissions may be dropped off at the Kenai library, attention Virginia Walters, or mailed to Central Peninsula Writers' Group, Box 3, Kenai, AK 99611. For more information, call Barbara Waters at 283-3216.
Logo design contest announced
The Seward Chamber of Commerce is accepting artwork designs for the 2004 Mount Marathon Race logo that will be used on T-shirts, pins, posters and finishers' patches. The prize for the designer of the selected logo is $400.
The design must fit on an 8 1/2- by 11-inch piece of paper and have four-color printing capabilities. Artwork must be signed by the artist. All submissions become the property of the chamber with credit given to the artist. The design must include the following information: Mt. Marathon Race, July 4, 2004, 77th running, Seward, Alaska, finisher or survivor (this will be replaced with "volunteer" for volunteer shirts).

Students' stories, photos wanted
Alaska Youth for Environmental Action invites Alaska elementary through college students to submit their personal stories and photos about unique wild places, either land or marine, in all regions of Alaska. Stories and photos will be compiled into a booklet that will include the natural history of these regions and a resource directory of organizations and agencies.
Writers are encouraged to describe a wild place and tell why it's important, including stories of time spent there, what changes the area faces in the future and what they hope to share about the place with their descendants. Written submissions are limited to 700 words. Photos of people enjoying or using these areas also are welcome. Submitted photos will not be returned.
The submission deadline is March 15. Art workshops offered
Stephanie Cox will teach four art workshops during the week of March 22. Each workshop will be composed of two, two-hour days. On March 22 and 23, exploring color using paints for kindergarten through third-graders will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon and introductory batik for fourth- through eighth-graders will be offered from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. On March 24 and 25, textured animal sculptures will be offered for kindergarten through third-graders from 10 a.m. to noon and painting Georgia O'Keefe style will be offered for fourth- through eighth-graders from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Assault awareness writing contest held
The Kenai-Soldotna Women's Resource and Crisis Center is holding its second annual poetry and essay contest in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The contest is open to all area high school juniors and seniors. The subject for submissions is "What can I do to stop dating violence-sexual assault in my school-town?" The submission deadline is March 26.
Two winners will be selected, one for poetry and one for essays. Prizes will be awarded at a reception, date and time to be announced.

Statewide poetry contest announced
The Fairbanks Arts Association's Literary Arts Committee is accepting entries for its 10th annual poetry contest. Winners will be announced in April during National Poetry Month and will be published in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner's Heartland edition.
There are three divisions with prizes awarded in each. In the adult division, first prize is $150, second is $100 and third is $50. In the high school division, first prize is $100, second is $50 and third is $25. In the grade- and middle-school division, first place is $50, second is $30 and third is $15.
The entry deadline is 5 p.m. March 28. The entry fee for grade, middle and high school entrants is $3 per poem or $10 for four poems and for adults is $4 per poem or $13 for four poems. Entrants may submit no more than four poems. All poems must be original and each must be typed on a 8 1/2- by 11-inch sheet of paper and may not exceed 100 lines in length.
The cover page should include the author's name, address, phone number and category and the titles of all poems submitted. The author's name should not appear on any poems.
No entries will be returned. A list of winners will be sent if a self-addressed stamped envelope is included in the entry.
