JUNEAU (AP) -- State Sen. John Torgerson will not seek re-election this November, he said Tuesday.
Torgerson, a Republican from Kasilof, said after serving two terms in the state Senate he wants to allow ''new blood'' into the Legislature.
Torgerson, 54, was first elected to the Senate in 1994. He is chairman of the senate Community and Regional Affairs and the Resources committees. He also chairs the Joint Committee on Natural Gas Pipelines.
Under a new redistricting map, Torgerson's district lost Homer and Seward and added Kenai and Nikiski. Torgerson also faces a possible challenge from Sen. Jerry Ward, R-Anchorage, who announced he would move to Nikiski because of changes to his own district.
Torgerson said through a press statement that the changes did not affect his decision to run again.
