Mount Marathon Race accepting applications

The Seward Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitors Bureau announces that applications for the 84th Annual Mount Marathon Race are being accepted. Runners hoping to race in 2011 must submit their completed application by midnight on March 31. Applications can be completed online at Application fees are $45 for adults and $25 for junior runners. Veterans and 2010 finishers have priority, with the remaining slots filled through a lottery system. Lottery results will be announced in mid-April. Week-long aviation camp in March

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is hosting a spring-break aviation camp, Challengers ACE Academy, for students in grades 8-11. The camp will have an orientation flight for all attendees, and include hands-on experience with Medallion flight simulator, wing design, forces of flight, weather and other aviation topics. CLCA is an approved vendor for Connections and IDEA. This camp will also satisfy many of the requirements for aviation related badges for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. ACE runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and costs $275. Participants should bring their own lunch each day. The Challenger center is located at 9711 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. Habitat for Humanity opens 2011 applications

Central Peninsula Habitat for Humanity has opened the application period for the 2011 summer build. Applications will be accepted throughout February. Please contact Sharon, at 262-7534, for more information about qualifications and an application.

Masters swim team hits the pool

The Kenai masters swim team swims from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Kenai Central High School pool. The group is open to swimmers over the age of 18. There is a $69 annual registration fee, and $50 montly fee. For more information, contact Will Hubler or Jenn Ticknor at 283-7476.

Singles meet up

A peninsula singles activity group is forming. The group will enjoy food, coffee and other adventures. The next gathering is scheduled for Feb. 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. Call Bobbie at 740-0832 or 260-5353 for the meeting location and more information.

Breavement support group meets

Hospice of the Central Peninsula is hosting a 9-week, free of charge, bereavement support group for those with any kind of loss. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 5 -- 6:30 p.m. beginning March 16. Please contact hospice at 262-0453 for more information.

Idita-Swim competition coming up

The Nikiski Pool will be offering its 3rd annual Idita-Swim Competition starting March 1. Every 50-yard lap swum or walked counts as one mile toward your trip to Nome. Prizes will be awarded along the way. Registration of $20 includes an Idita-Swim T-shirt. The competition runs March 1 through April 29. For more information please contact Nigel at 776-8800.

Public health center to close for holiday

The Kenai Public Health Center will be closed Monday, Feb. 21, in observance of Presidents' Day. The center will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. Call 335-3400 for more information.

Summer soccer registration open

The Boys and Girls Club is accepting registrations for outdoor soccer for ages 4 years through 12th grade. For grades 6 -- 12, the season runs from June 6 -- July 23, the cost is $70 and the registration deadline is Friday, April 15, at 4 p.m. For ages 4 years to 5th grade, the season runs from June 13 -- July 30. Cost is $60 and the registration deadline is Friday, April 22, at 4 p.m. The child must be 4 by April 22. All participants must be 2011 members. Membership cost is $10 for kindergarten and under, $75 for 1st -- 12th graders. Scholarships are available. Registrations are taken at the Kenai Recreation Center, or fax to 283-4675. Kids' car seat checks offered

Safety experts host a child car seat check on Feb. 25, at Central Emergency Services/Soldotna Fire Department, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death and injury to children ages 0-15.
