The Kenai Peninsula's high school cross-country ski teams will take to the trails beginning today in Fairbanks, and with the Soldotna boys leading the chrage, there's an excellent chance that an Alaska School Activities Association State Championship team ski title could come to the peninsula for the first time.
Competition starts on the Birch Hill course with today's 1 p.m. girls 7.5-kilometer classical race, followed by the boys 10-kilometer classical race.
Friday, skiers switch to freestyle, with the boys taking to the 7.5-kilometer course at 2 p.m., followed by the girls, who will ski 5 kilometers.
The event concludes with Saturday's mixed technique relays, in which the first two skiers will ski the classical discipline and the second two skiers ski freestyle.
The girls start their four 3-kilometer legs at 11 a.m. followed by the boys, who will ski 5-kilometer legs.
