Kenai, Ninilchik notch victories

Posted: Friday, February 21, 2003

The Kenai Central High School boys basketball team got a taste of its own medicine -- namely the 3-pointer -- Thursday, but rallied for a 78-63 victory over Unalakleet in the opening round of the GCI Invitational in Bethel.

The Kenai girls also scored a victory, defeating the Wolf Pack 54-47 in a tight game.

The Kenai boys matched Unalakleet with 22 points in the first half, but found themselves down by three, 38-35, at the half. A big part of the Wolf Pack's success was the 3-pointer -- Unalakleet netted 11 treys in the game, including six in the first quarter. Dean Towarak scored eight 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 31 points.

Kenai rallied for a big third quarter, though, outscoring the Wolf Pack 25-14 in the frame. Five Kenai players scored in double digits, led by Steve Steiner's 25 points. Ian Foley scored 16, Dakota Craig netted 14, Caleb Schooley scored 12 and Dean Shinn finished with 11 points.

The Kenai girls trailed Unalakleet 10-7 after the first quarter but had a one-point, 20-19 edge at the half. Kenai added to its lead in the third quarter and finished the game with a big fourth quarter.

Erin Smith paced the Kardinals with 19 points while Dallas Baldwin scored 11.
