Stars finish perfect on trip to Kodiak

Soldotna's cagers went 4-0 on a trip to Kodiak this weekend.

The Stars girls notched a 46-43 Northern Lights Conference victory on Friday in Kodiak.

Kelsey VanAntwerp nailed a 3-pointer -- her only basket of the game -- as time expired to lift the Stars. The win was huge for Soldotna because it kept open the possibility of taking the top spot from the Southern Division in the NLC tourney.

Karen Senette paced the Stars with 17 points, while Kailee Skjold had 15. For Kodiak, Joanna Garcia had 13 points while Megan Grupp had 12.

The girls completed the sweep with a 43-30 nonconference win on Saturday.

The Stars held a 27-10 advantage at the half. The deficit was too great for the Bears to recover from.

Karen Senette led SoHi with 13 points. Jessie Duke chipped in 10.

The boys held off the Bears for a 52-41 NLC victory on Friday. SoHi completed the sweep on Saturday with a 59-50 nonconference win.

On Saturday, Blaine Carver paced the Stars with 14 points. Boomer Blossom followed with 11.

On Friday, Kodiak pulled within one in the fourth quarter, but Soldotna went on a 15-5 run to end the game.

Boomer Blossom had 20 points for Soldotna, while Blaine Carver added 11. For the Bears, Raphael Matautia had 19 points.

Colony girls 55, Homer 15

Nine different players tallied points in the Knights win over Homer on Saturday. Colony held a 39-6 lead at the half. They outscored Homer 26-9 in the second half.

Liz Needham led the Lady Mariners with seven points.

CIA girls 37, Su Valley 23

Tiffany Smith poured in 15 points to lead CIA to a 37-23 win over Susitna Valley on Saturday.

Holding a six-point lead at the half, the Eagles pumped in 14 third-quarter points to Su Valley's six. The lead proved too much for the Rams to recover from.

CIA boys 52, Su Valley 45

Matthew Moffis erupted for 37 points in CIA's 52-45 win over Susitna Valley on Saturday.

Twenty of Moffis' points came in the third quarter. He made 14 of the Eagles' 20 field goals in the game.

Colony boys 53, Homer 49

Homer put together an 18-point fourth quarter, but Colony held on for a 53-49 win over the Mariners at Colony High School on Saturday.

Colony senior captain John Palmer scored 17 points to lead the Knights to the Northern Lights Conference win. Senior Scott Herman added 11 points to help the Knights improve to 7-1 in NLC play. Sophomore Jared Turner added nine points during the victory.

Luke Garvey led Homer with 14 points.

Palmer boys 82, Skyview 18

Trey Fullmer and Kyle Titus each hit a pair of three-pointers during Palmer's 28-point second quarter to spark an 82-18 route of Skyview at Palmer High School on Saturday.

Titus, a senior, hit nailed four, three-pointers and scored all of his team-high 14 points in the first half. Junior Sean Niekamp added 13 points and Fullmer chipped in 10.

Jordan Jones led the Panthers with 10 points.

Palmer girls 59, Skyview 44

Kasara Brandenburg scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Palmer girls to a win over Skyview on Saturday.

Monica Nuernberg added nine points in the win and captain Shawna Thein pitched in eight for the Moose. Casee Penrod led Skyview with a game-high 18.

ACS boys 53, Seward 40

Anchorage Christian Schools defeated Seward in Southcentral Conference action on Saturday.

Michael Thorn and Andrew Buchanan led the Seahawks with 10 points apiece.

ACS girls 50, Seward 36

Debbiey Simmers pumped in 20 points as Anchorage Christian Schools defeated Seward in Southcentral Conference play on Saturday.

Meg Berry had a team-high 13 points for the Seahawks.

Colony girls 63, Skyview 32

The host Knights notched a Northern Lights Conference victory on Friday over the Panthers.

Colony put three players in double figures in the victory. For the Panthers, Ivy O'Guinn had 11 points while Jaxon Hill had 10 points.

Colony boys 71, Skyview 32

The host Knights cruised to a Northern Lights Conference victory on Friday over the Panthers.

Scott Herman had 12 points for Colony, while John Palmer added 11 points. For Skyview, Jordan Jones dumped in 10 points.

Port Lions girls 41, Ninilchik 37

The Kings notched a nonconference victory on Saturday at Ninilchik.

Cierra Robustellini had 15 points to lead Port Lions, while Marquee Strong added 13 points. For Ninilchik, Lindsey Rohr had 12 points and Brittani Motoyama had 10 points.

Palmer girls 46, Homer 27

The host Moose clamped down on defense to pick up a Northern Lights Conference victory over the Mariners.

Kasara Brandenburg had 12 points for Palmer, while Anna Koehn added 11. For Homer, Haley Oliver dumped in six points.

Palmer boys 61, Homer 38

The host Moose cruised to a Northern Lights Conference victory on Friday over the Mariners. Devon Kennelty had 19 points to pace the Mariners.

Lumen Tournament

Seldovia's girls won the Lumen Christi tournament with a 43-22 victory over Lumen on Saturday.

Sarah Geagel led the Sea Otters with 16 points. Ashley Beach had a team-high 15 for the Archangels.

Geagel, along with Sarah O'Leary, were named to the all-tournament team. Nikolaevsk's Nianiella Dorvall was also named to the all-tourney team.

In other Saturday girls action, Bristol Bay beat Nikolaevsk 40-16. Anna Chukwak led Bristol Bay with 10 points. Sophia Kalugin had a team-high seven for the Warriors.

A 52-43 win over Lumen gave Bristol Bay's boys the tournament title on Saturday.

Zach Pete led the Angels with 14 points. Ted Sturgulewski and Seth Bakic each had 14 for Lumen.

Nanwalek's Matt Gain earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Nikolaevsk's Jonah Yakunin and Christopher Kalugin also were named to the all-tourney team.

In other Saturday boys action, Nikolaevsk defeated Whittier 53-39. Yakunin led the Warriors with 17 points. Justin Lipscomb had a team-high 10 for Whittier.

Bristol Bay defeated Nanwalek 61-45. Christopher Kvasnikoff led Nanwalek with 14 points. Luke Wilson paced the Angels with 18.

In Friday girls games, Seldovia defeated Nikolaevsk 37-12 behind 15 points from Courtney Collier and 10 points from Sarah Geagel. Also for the Sea Otters, Sirena Turner and Sarah O'Leary had four points apiece while Mariah Turner and Kathleen Gruber had two points apiece. For Nikolaevsk, Sophia Kalugin and Kikilia Kogin had four points and Priscilla Dorvall and Nianiella Dorvall had two points.

The Bristol Bay girls also notched a 45-27 victory over Lumen Christi on Friday.

In Friday boys games, Nanwalek pulled out a 54-50 victory over Nikolaevsk. In the final minutes, Matthew Gain of Nanwalek hit 6-of-7 from the line to get the win. Gain led all scorers with 23 points, while Nanwalek's Christopher Kvasnikoff added 11. Also for Nanwalek, Vladimir Moonin had eight, Antone Ukatish had six, Alyssa Romanoff had four and Jace Evans had two.

For Nikolaevsk, Christopher Kalugin had 12, Matthew Trail and Peter Konovalov had nine apiece, Blake Klaich and Jonah Yakunin had five apiece, David Ivanov had four, and Cameron McCollum and Eric Mameitieff had three apiece.

Also Friday, Bristol Bay defeated Nikolaevsk 48-46. Jaxon Wassillie had 23 points for Bristol Bay while Luke Wilson added 12 points.

For Nikolaevsk, Christopher Kalugin had 18 points, Matthew Fefelov had 11 points, Jonah Yakunin had eight points, Peter Konovalov had four points and David Ivanov had three points.

In another Friday boys game, Whittier topped Nanwalek 48-46 when a Nanwalek 3-pointer at the buzzer missed its mark.

Nick Swain paced Whittier with 19 points, while Alex Phillips had 11 points. For Nanwalek, Matthew Gain had 23 points, Christopher Kvasnikoff had 13 points, Vladimir Moonin had five points, Jace Evans had two points and Alyssa Romanoff added a point.

The Whittier boys also notched a 42-35 victory over Lumen Christi on Friday.
