SoHi's Besse gets it done at Vanguard

Rachel Besse, a 2003 graduate of Soldotna High School, was named Lion of the Week for her performance on the Vanguard University basketball team.

In two games last week, Besse, a 6-foot-3 center, scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. During that span, Besse was 12 of 21 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. She is averaging 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Vanguard is ranked third in the most recent National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll. The Lions are 20-2 overall and are in first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 12-2 record.

SoHi's Williams earns award at Valley City State

Shaun Williams, a 2001 graduate of Soldotna High School, was named a 2003 Daktronics-NAIA Football All-American Scholar-Athlete. Williams finished his junior year playing starting free safety at Valley City State University in North Dakota. He had a total of 63 tackles, including 36 unassisted tackles. He also averaged 18 yards per kick return and 11 yards per punt return. Finally, he had one interception, 15 pass breakups and one fumble recovery. Williams is the son of Ric and Karen Williams of Soldotna.
