The father-son team of Scott and Cory Davis, both of Soldotna, held second place in the Iron Dog early Monday evening.
The Davises pulled into Galena two minutes behind defending champions Tyler Huntington of Fairbanks and Chris Olds of Eagle River. Galena is 648 miles into the 2,031-mile event. Both of the top two teams took a layover there.
Also from the Kenai Peninsula, Dusty Van Meter of Kasilof and Marc McKenna of Anchorage are sitting in ninth place. They were taking a layover in Ruby, which is 596 miles into the race.
The racers are expected to reach the halfway point of Nome on Tuesday, where they will take a layover.
